Your induction

Your apprenticeship starts here.

You said yes, and we are glad you did. This site walks you from where you are now to your first day, then through your first weeks on programme, one clear step at a time.

Why this matters

Three things you will know by the end of induction.

i

Know the deal

What your employer has committed to, what TLC has committed to, and what is asked of you. All of it in writing, none of it a surprise.

ii

Know the structure

Your training plan, your off-the-job hours inside paid time, the evidence you gather and the end-point assessment waiting at the far end.

iii

Know your people

Your skills coach, your mentor, your manager and TLC's safeguarding lead. Who they are, what they do and how to reach them.

The whole journey

Ten steps, from first interest to what comes after.

Every apprenticeship at TLC follows the same line. You have already covered some of it. The sage marker shows where induction sits.

1

Expression of interest

You told us you wanted to look at this properly. Done.

2

Initial assessment

Maths, English and what you already know, so the programme fits you.

3

Enrolment conversation

You, your employer and TLC agree the shape of it together.

4

Training plan signed

The agreement in writing. Duration, delivery and protected time.

You are here
5

Induction

Your first weeks. Six parts, read in order, each with a pause to reflect.

6

Learning and reviews

Teaching, workplace practice, evidence and regular three-way reviews.

7

Gateway

You, your employer and TLC agree you are ready to be assessed.

8

End-point assessment

An independent assessor confirms what you can do.

9

Certificate

Your qualification, earned in the job, recognised everywhere.

10

Progression

The next role, the next level or the next standard. Your call.

Before day one

The road to day one.

Three things happen between saying yes and starting. If you have already done some of them, this section is your record of what they were for.

Step one

Initial assessment

Maths, English and the experience you already carry. Your programme has to teach you things that are new, so what you bring gets counted, and the plan is shaped or shortened to fit you.

Step two

The enrolment conversation

You, your employer and TLC around one table. What you will learn, when you will learn it, who teaches what, and who protects the time. Nothing is signed until you have heard all of it.

Step three

Your training plan

The whole agreement in writing: duration, delivery, your off-the-job learning averaging at least six hours a week inside paid time, and what each of the three of you has committed to.

Your first weeks

Your induction, in six parts.

Six short parts, given to you as a handbook on day one and unpacked here as you go. Read them in order. Each one ends with a moment to write down what you have understood.

Your plan, and a pause to reflect.

Your plan

Your first steps, in one place

Your direction, your commitments and what you bring, written down by you and kept somewhere you can return to. Work through it at your own pace.

Reflection

End of induction

When the six parts are done you stop for ten minutes and write down what you have understood, what you are unsure about and what you want from your first review. It becomes the first page of your progress story.

Who to talk to.

Five people, five different jobs. Start with whoever fits the question, and if you pick the wrong one they will point you to the right one.

Your manager
Rotas, cover for your protected learning time, and how the job and the apprenticeship fit together week to week.
Your workplace mentor
The day-to-day. Someone alongside you who has done the job and knows what your first weeks feel like.
TLC support
Anything you would rather ask us directly. Email info@tlc-uk.org and a person will reply.
TLC's designated safeguarding lead
If something feels wrong, at work or outside it, you can speak to our safeguarding lead direct and in confidence. This route is always open, whoever else is involved.
